What is smart keyless entry?
Passive remote entry systems on a vehicle, sometimes called keyless entry systems, have a variety of life-changing advantages. The most significant perk of keyless entry is the convenience it provides. Depending on which keyless system you have in your car, you can be loaded down with groceries and still open the hatch with a wave of your foot. Just press the button and go, no more struggling to insert the key into the lock. The better security keyless entry offers is another big perk. The electronics in the key must be recognized by your vehicle before it will open any doors or start the engine. There are some keyless systems that can lock your doors automatically when you walk away. Finally, there’s the fun side of keyless entry, remote ignition. Seeing your car start from the press of a button on your fob will make you feel like an everyday wizard.
All Passive systems are keyless, but not all Keyless Systems are passive. We get it, it’s confusing. Here is how it works. Keyless Entry calls for you to push buttons on a key to lock and unlock the car doors and other features like opening the trunk. Passive Keyless is when you can keep your keys in your pocket (or purse) and then you touch an area (like a spot on a door) to lock and unlock the doors, or wave your foot underneath the vehicle to open the hatch. One advantage of passive entry systems is that they usually include Keyless Ignition. Keyless Ignition allows drivers to start and drive their car without the key fob ever leaving their pocket.
To be clear, Remote Start and Keyless Ignition are different features, even if they return similar results. Keyless Ignition lets you start and drive your car without using a regular key. Remote Ignition lets drivers start their vehicle via their key fob or mobile app. Remote Ignition can be beneficial in extreme temperatures such as very cold or very hot days by allowing you to start the car and help cool it off when it’s hot. Drivers will no longer get into a hot car again, simply use the Remote Start and allow your car to cool off before you take off.
A Smart Key is an electronic way (fob, smartphone app, key card) that is used to remotely access a car. The buttons for your wireless functions are usually found on the Smart Key itself. A Smart Key sends signals to your car to open the trunk, unlock the doors, and so on. Some cars will not start without the Smart Key, as they are part of the anti-theft system. With so many fun and convenient options available on Smart Keys, why would you pick anything else?
